Laser Engraved - Wood Cutting Boards

4/25/2017

When I started this Laser Engraving business, one of the items we started doing for customers immediately were cutting boards.   They were simple yet very classy and soon became very popular.  We now offer about 7 different styles and the 3 boards below are our most popular.

These boards measure 13.5" x 11.5" x .75" thick.  The two tone Bamboo gives a classic color combination that is crisp and amazing.  Although we didn't realize it at the time we soon found out that Bamboo is one wood that gives a very nice look once lasered.   Its funny how sometimes you just land on a quality product out of luck and that is exactly what we did when we started doing these boards.

Soon after we started making these boards, it became necessary to attach a style to each one so that when at a show or describing them to others we could easily distinguish one cutting board from another.  The Styles below are: The Trinity, The Huber, and The Deegan. :-)  Strangely enough those where the first names we put on those particular styles and they just stuck!

In the beginning we just bought the  cutting boards at Bed Bath and Beyond.  Now we buy them through JDS industries because we can get a good bulk pricing discount.  In this business it is so important to keep COGS down.  (Cost Of Goods Sold)  Keeping COGS down and Quality up is what we try to do here at MBJD LASER and this is one product that has stood the test of time.

Of course we do fully custom cutting boards as well!

Groomsman Gifts / Pocket Knife

Here is a fun project we got the opportunity to do for groomsman gifts here in Wichita, Kansas.  Here at MBJD Laser we monogramed some pocket knives for a customer and they turned out fantastic.  After doing a little research the knife handles were made of olive wood.  To be honest they felt and looked a lot like pine.  After engraving the letters onto each handle we ended up doing a black paint fill so that the letters would really pop off of the light colored wood.

One thing I would highly suggest is to wrap the handle in some kind of app tape.  The app tape does two things for the engraving process.  1. It shields the wood from smoke residue.  2. It also helps when doing the paint fill because it works like a mask.  Similar to when  you paint a room in the house the tape helps so that you don't get unwanted paint on places it should not be in.

Of course these type jobs are a bit nerve racking but if you do your research and take your time its no trouble at all.

Laser Engraving a Picture on Black Granite

4/13/2017

It has been a while since we have laser engraved any pictures on granite.  In fact we created these black granite pieces about a year ago and I wanted to share them here to show just how amazing they can look. All of these granite pieces measure 12" x 12" and were bought at our local Lowes store.  We do our best to support our local stores for substrates.  I like being able to buy the substrates as needed and not stock to much unless we absolutely have to.  As you can see, pictures on Granite look amazing, with great clarity.

The process for lasering onto granite is much like wood, acrylic, and other items.  First we need a good quality JPEG image.  Next we take that image to Photoshop and delete the background.  Deleting the background is important because ifyou don't the picture gets a washed out look.  (trust me images on granite look best with the background deleted)  Next we upload it to our PhotoGrav software.  To be honest here, PhotoGrav does a lot of the work and gets the image to where our laser can really bring out the "bling" as I like to say.  If you are an engrave and you have never used PhotoGrav I highly suggest using it.  Once PhotoGrav does its work it is ready for the laser.

I would give you exact speed and power setting if I could but there is an element of experamentation and If I told you and you tried it you would just be disappointed.  Believe me when I say there is a bit of trial and error to find the sweet spot when laser engraving onto granite.

I have found that these make great anniversary gifts, pet memorials or wedding keepsakes!  The best way to display them is with an easel on a bookshelf or mantle.

Lasering on M&M's .....Say what!?

Yesterday I thought we would try doing something just for fun and a bit out of the ordinary.  We took some peanut butter M&M's and thought what the heck lets try lasering something onto them.  I wouldn't call the quality of the lasering an A+ on all colors but it is unique and very interesting.

Where do I see these being sold?  Well I'm not really sure.  They would make fun birthday gifts or just silly conversation pieces in a bowl.  You have to admit they are kinda cool.  I have been asked often if we actually ate them and YES...we did.  :-)

If you have a unique item that  you would like us to try please send us your requests!

Laser Engraved Coffee Mugs

4/4/2017

So as a small business owner, sometimes we get caught up in doing the same things over and over.  We engrave things that are proven and in our comfort zone.  The tried and true projects are what we naturally gravitate to. Today we tried a new product at the request of a customer and  it turned out fantastic. Before we tell you about the product and how great it looks let me explain why we had been avoiding this product in the first place.

Most engravers are keenly aware that round objects such as flashlights, vases, and drinking glasses or toasting flutes are no problem.  However, when there is a handle on these round objects such as typical coffee mugs, it can cause real headaches.  The reason it is problematic is because the handle in many cases interferes with the rotary attachment.  I had customer this past week who was very interested in us doing coffee mugs so I decided to give it a try and the outcome was amazing.

The design ultimately engraved crisp and clean and gave an outstanding look.  It turns out that aligning the mug in the rotary attachment was not difficult at all. The awesome thing is these mugs come in about 8 different colors giving the appeal to so many different people.

So my word of advice to other engravers is......"don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something new."  You might just find the next big thing your shop can do!
