So as a small business owner, sometimes we get caught up in doing the same things over and over. We engrave things that are proven and in our comfort zone. The tried and true projects are what we naturally gravitate to. Today we tried a new product at the request of a customer and it turned out fantastic. Before we tell you about the product and how great it looks let me explain why we had been avoiding this product in the first place.
Most engravers are keenly aware that round objects such as flashlights, vases, and drinking glasses or toasting flutes are no problem. However, when there is a handle on these round objects such as typical coffee mugs, it can cause real headaches. The reason it is problematic is because the handle in many cases interferes with the rotary attachment. I had customer this past week who was very interested in us doing coffee mugs so I decided to give it a try and the outcome was amazing.
The design ultimately engraved crisp and clean and gave an outstanding look. It turns out that aligning the mug in the rotary attachment was not difficult at all. The awesome thing is these mugs come in about 8 different colors giving the appeal to so many different people.
So my word of advice to other engravers is......"don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something new." You might just find the next big thing your shop can do!
